" So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless—like chasing the wind."- Eccless 2:17
The other day, I pondered my life. What was the purpose of my life? The question brought Solomon's words to my mind: everything is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. Solomon pointed out that without God, life is futile, but God gives meaning. Consider the godless. They accumulate wealth, they work their way up the ladder. They do many works, but for what purpose? Life goes on and on. It reminds me of a story I am reading. It's called Escape from Paradise written by Daniel Ferguson. The main character gets lost and ends up living with the ow mountain people who do the same thing over and over and without meaning or purpose.
There is nothing wrong with accumulating wealth as long as you are rich to God and not self. You can use wealth to advance the kingdom of God, but if you are like the man who has plenty of goods stored up, what advantage is that to you? Jesus said that thieves steal and moth and rust destroy. If your heart is for the kingdom of God, you can make investments that will pay off in the end. However many godless who store up wealth are like that farmer.
Solomon wrote when you spend your life without God (godlessness) it is all meaningless and a chasing after the wind. Some translations calls it grasping the wind or vexation of the spirit. Have you tried to grasp wind? Do you even know what it looks like? Jesus told Nicodemus that you can't see the wind but you can see the effects of the wind. So it is all pointless and that's what living without God is like. What is the point of living if you just go about everyday doing the same thing without God? In chapter 2, Solomon wrote that he accomplished many things but it was all meaningless. Remember, he feel away from God when I married pagan women.
If you are not living for God, then you are living for yourself or whatever is first in your life. Only God can give meaning to life.
